How People Search Online for Local Businesses

Understanding how your customers will find the value of your local goods and/or services is really as simple as drawing from personal experience. Depending on how urgent the need, or how serious the situation, the process of searching may require days or weeks. Consumers rely on keywords to find what they need.

Search engines are great at sifting through gobs of data to find what you are looking for. The key is punching in the correct key words. Say, for example, you've suddenly noticed a leak in the ceiling and you're not sure how to find the source of the problem. Or, maybe you are not particularly handy and just don't feel confident enough to try to fix the problem your self.

As long as you have an Internet connection, professional help is no more than a few keystrokes away. There are plenty of search engines out there, Google Yahoo!, and Ask.com are some of the most popular. In fact, there are search engines that search known search engines, like WebCrawler; these are known as metasearch engines. The point is that there are more than enough avenues to find what you need online. It obviously follows that there are more than enough avenues for potential customers to find you, and the secret is key word searches.

Back to our example, you would need to know a keyword for the industry that can fix your problem. It could be as simple as: "roofing" or "roof installers". But this is only the first step. If you simply punched in "roof installers", you'd get a list of roof installers from all over the country. Literally, the list would be too long to sort through; you might notice a heading at the top of the page stating that you are looking at 1-10 of about 1,000,000. That's insane.

Next you would need to tell the search engine to narrow the search to roof installers in your area. Try punching in "roof installers New Jersey" (your state). This would narrow the search immensely, but you would need to narrow it down to installers in your city. Bingo, you find a reputable installer and set up the appointment after a follow up call, and it most likely took a few minutes. In case you're wondering, search engines are not case sensitive, so it will not matter if you type it in upper or lower case.

As you begin to advertise your small business, to put it on the cyber map, it helps to know just how people will search for your local business. How so? It will help you select the best keywords to include in your domain name, your advertisement articles, your online coupon promotions, etc. You might even benefit from going through this process to find some of your competitors. Understand that they will probably do the same thing to you. It's nothing personal, just business.
